warrior ; that is to fay, upon the marquis de Mont-serrat *, who, for a long time, had been engaged in war againft the lords of Milan, and was at this time ib employed. They fent to him to come to Avig-non, where he was received with much honor by the pope and cardinals* '
A treaty was then entered into with him. He agreed, for a confiderable fum of money, to free the territories of the pope and the neighbourhood of thofe freebooting companies, and to lead them with fcim into Lombardy.
The marquis negotiated, therefore, with the captains of thefe companies t, and managed fo well that by means of fixty thoufand florins which he divided among them, and the high pay he promifed diem, they confented to follow him into Lombardy ;

* Tke company of Englifh adventurers who now entered into the fervice of the marquis of Montferrat, 1363, is faio% bj fcturatori, vol. xii* p. 207, to have been commanded by one Albarei.
* Upon the conclufion of the peace between this, roarquis of Montferrat and Gajeazzo, the few Englifh who remained with the former, went and joined their countrymen in Tuf-cany, and foon after formed one body under Hawkwood.'
There mufti be a miftake refpefling the date of 1363, for Froiffart, as well as Denys Sauvage, foes it pofitively 1361.
