452 AN'NALS OF ROGER. DE HOTEDEN. A.D. 1199. indignation and hatred, it was told him, that the king of France had sent the above message relative to him to the king his brother. In consequence of this, the said earl of Mortaigne sent two knights in his behalf to the court of the king of France, who offered in every way to make proof that he was innocent of the said charge, or to defend him, according as the court of the king of France should think proper.
