Sleidanus compofed this abridgment during his abode in France,
^confequently after the edition of 1530, and infcribed it to the cardinal John -du Belay, bifhop of Paris, his great patron, from whom he received a -penfiou "-In -this handfome ^dedication, of the 12th July 1537, which is at the feme time a preface* be recommends learning in general, particularly to all who take part in the government ; principally the reading £ good hiftorians, fuch as Froiflart, whom, on account of his over-great prolixity, he has reduced to an epitome, without omitting any thing important* Bat the englifh author, Humphrey Llwyd, in Le Long, •p. S689'accn6t Mm, notwithflanding, feat out of partiality for the French, he has palled over the mod glorious avians of the Englifh, and has 'defcribed many a thing otherwife than in Froiflart. This abridgment, on account of the flyle merits every confideration, but is too briefly, arranged, whkhr Sauvage alfo allows; and we are unable therefrom to form an idea of fee fpirit *of fee original. The .following may ferve to fhow rhow far wc• may «ly upon this abridgment. Sleidanus relates,_ page 72, the iconduft of the Pariftans before thercatry of king Charles VI. which I have ^briefly extraéted from fee fragment, and judges fee Pariftans feus: * Sed % profeétà longé diverfa cogitarunt aiftè, et nifi viftor ille rediiflèt, mira
contigiflènt. Jufli redire in urbem et deponere arma, paruerunt, Per
otium deindt, ex confilio patruorum, caepit eos pro meritis traétare.' Froiflàrt's judgment, in p. 5. of the fragment, is quite otherwife : 1 Mieux leur vaulfift sf eftre tenus quois en leurs maifons. Car celle monftre leur fut depuis conuertie en grande feruitude : fi comme vous orrez recorder* Ik difoyent qu'ils faifayent tout ce pour bien : mais ont l'entendit à mal.9
