THOMAS JOHNES, ESQ.
Memoirs of the life of Sir John Froissart
page 138
Michael le Noir, the 15th July 1505, alfo three volumes; Paris, by Galliot du Pré, 1530, three volumes ; Sauvage's, Paris, by Gervais Maliot, 157*, three volumes in folio. Clement judges very rightly, that thefe editions* required to be carefully defcribed by Mr- de la Curne, as he had inftitutecfc an inquiry into Froifikrt's life, chara&er, and hiftoryr
5. Laftly, Clement has accurately defcribed two copies which he had' laid before him as two diftinéfc ones. Thefe are briefly, vol. i. pour Francois Reynautd, s. a. 271 leaves folio, vol. i. pour Antoine Verard, s. a. *, 271 leaves, fmall folio, merely with a new title-page and concluding leaf. vol. ii-pour Francois Reynault, s. a. 279 leaves fmall folio ; vol. n. pour Antoine Verard par Michel le Noir, 1505, the 15th July, 279 leaves folio, with a new title-page and fifteen new-printed leaves at the end. Thefe fifteen leaves*, with the name of Le Noir and the date 1505, are mod probably added to this copy of the fécond volume, fo that the greater half of that belongs to an edition without date, but the leflèr to the edition of 1505 ; vol. in. par Antoine Verard, s. a. 231 leaves twice over; vol. iv. pour Antoine Verard,. 1518, the 7th O&ober, 106 leaves alfo twice : therefore only fix volumes really different, of two copies, each of four volumes, all' of the fame gothic print ; and as this is the cafe, fo the diftinétion betwixt folio and fmall folio-may well derive its origin from the bookbinder. Clement is of opinion,, that aU which were printed by Le Noir belong only to one and the fame edition.
6. Yet Clement cites the following editions: from Robert Fifher CataL Biblioth. Bodlei. T. i. p. 461. T. u n. m. s. a. all three pour Fr. Reynault, T. iv. 1513. chez Fr. Reynault (Hyde, p% 167. has only three volumes of 1505.)}
* -According to Mr F. K. G. Hirfehkig's Defcriptku* of the Libraries in Germany, voL iu-Erlangen 1788r quarto, page 4S4, a copy of the firft volume is found in die Mayoralty Library of the earl Noftitz at Prague ; alfo m fécond volume, the writing of which fhould have been cited at die end. The annotation marks, that Verard had it printed at Paris 1480, perhaps as a hint that the firft edition had toe great an age, whtMt, on die contrary, by Clement's Notices, k'firft made its; appearance a Ittle before or foon aller 1500, and acccu Maictaire, alfo t. i. p. 156. Verard. firft began to prim k die year 1480.
