A PARLIAMENT MEETS AT WESTMINSTER, WHEN THE DURE OP LANCASTER IS PUBLICLY AC-KNOWLEDGED KING OF ENGLAND.—THE GREAT MAGNIFICENCE OF HIS CORONA-TION.
rYN a Wednefday, the laft day of September 1399, Henry duke of Lancafter held a par- " liament at Weftminfter $ at which were aflembled the greater part of the clergy and nobility of England, and a fufficient number of deputies from-the different towns, according to their extent and wealth. -
In this parliament, the duke of Lancafter chal- • lenged the crown of England, and claimed it as his own, for three reafons: firft, by conqueft ; fecondly, from being the right heir to it; and,-thirdly, from the pure and free refignation of it to him, by king Richard, in the prefence of the pre-lates, dukes and earls in the hall of the Tower of London. Thefe three claims being made, he re- • quired the parliament to declare their opinion and will. Upon this, they unanimoufly replied, that it was their will he fhould be king, for they would have no other. . He again afked, if they were pofu tive in this declaration ; and, when they faid they were, he feated himfelf on the royal throne. This throne was elevated fome feet from the floor, with
