Upon this, twM cardinals of his creation, who forefàw that matters would end badly, ftepped forward and faid,€. Holy father, the bifhop of Cam-bray advifes you yell : follow what he fays, we en-treat you/ The pope replied, he would do fa willingly : the audience was put m end to, and. the bifhop returned to his lodgings, without Wait-ing on any of the cardinals.
On the next morning, the confiftory bel was rung, and a conclave hplden of all the cardinals then at Avignon, at the pope's palace. The bir ihop of Caifibray difcourfed in Latin on the rea-fbns why he was come thither, and on the objeft of thofe who had fent him. When he had finiihed fpeaking, he was told they would maturely confider the bufinefs, and give him an anfwer, bût that at prefent he muft withdraw. He went elfewhere to amufe himfelf, while Benedict and his cardinal* debated his propofals. They were for a confi-dcrable time 'in council, and many thought it very hard to undo what had been regularly efFe&ed ; but the cardinal of Amiens faid,—c My fair firs, whether we will or not, we muft obey the orders of the emperof of Germany and the king ot France, fince they are now united $ for, without their good pleafure, we cannot exift. We might indeed withftand the emperor, if the, king "of France would fupport us, but, as that is no longer the cafe, we muft fubmit^ or he will exclude us from all our benefices, and how then are we to live.
