We Will now leave the affairs of Germany, France and Navarre, to fpeak of what bcfel Eng-land, whence fprung fuch melancholy events as have not been recorded in this hiftory, and which my readers will allow when they come to the de-tail of them.

V"ING Richard of England was of a temper that, when he took a liking to any one, he inftantly raifed him to high honours, and had fuch confidence in him that no one dared to fay any thing to his prejudice. At the fame time, there had not been a king of England in the memory of man who fo eafily believed all that was told him. His favourites, however, paid no attention to the miferable fate of many of their predeceflbrs i how the duke of Ireland had been banifhed, fir Simon Burley, fir Robert Trefilian, fir Nicholas Brambre and others had loft their lives, for counfels they had given the king, and for which the duke of Glocefter had taken great pains in their deftruc-tion.
