\TOU have often heard of the feuds between the dule of Brittany and fir Oliver de Cîifïbn j mi that, whenever the two parties met, a deadly engagement enfued, without either fide (hewing mercy. In this warfare, however, fir Oliver had the advantage, for two-thirds of the country were in his favour. The barons of Brittany dilfembled between both ; and the citizens of the chief towns told the duke, that this war no way concerned them, and that they would not interfere in it, for that commerce was more eiTential to them than a war with the lord de Cliflbn. ,
Sir Oliver held them excufed in regard to hinj* as they Would be mediators in a peace, which the viicoimt de Rohan, the lord de Léon and the lord de Dignan, were pre fling on. the duke of Brittany, who had declared to thefe three lords, that if he could obtain a meeting with the lord de Cliffon, he would comply with fuch terms as they fhould thmk honourable to propofe*
Thefe three barons went to the cattle where fir Oliver refuted, and told him how far they had
fucceeded
