at teifure, they made their clerks demand from thfe dukes of Berry and Burgundy how they under?, ftood fuch expreffions j • for the Englifh dukes would not pafs over an article that had the leaf!: tendency to a double meaning \ and whatever they did not clearly underftand they had erâfed in their prcfence, declaring they would not allow of any thing that could bear a mifconftru&ion, for that the French, who had been from their youth trained' to fuch things, were more fubtle than the Englifh. So many difficulties greatly lengthened the con-ferences % and the Englifh held themfelves obliged to demand reftitution of all the lands dependant on Aquitaine, and their profits fince the; commence-ment of the war, as they had been charged to do by the parliament of England. This the French would not agree to : they were willing, indeed, to yield the countries of Tarbes, Bigorrc, Agen and the Agenois, with Pcrigord, but declared they would never reftore Cahors, Rouergue, Quercy ^and Limoufln, nor give up any part of Pohthieu or Guines more than the Englifh pofTefled at the prefent moment. • On thefe grounds things remained : they ftood out for upwards of fifteen days, and only came to the conclufion that it fhould be laid before the two kin§s : to forward the bufinefs, the dukes of Berry and Burgundy offered to fet out for Abbeville, to &ifbrm the king of France of all that had paffed ; and, if he would acquiefce in the Englifh propofals, diey would not ©ppôfc diem.
