BEFORE the king of France wait to Guel-dres, and during the time he was there, the Englifh fleet under the command of the earl of Arundel kept hovering along his coafts, juft as the wind drove them, in fearch of adventures. You muft know, that generally from this firft of October to All-faints day the weather is stormy j but this year it was unufually fo, which fhattered the Englifh fleet, and there was no feaman on board, however bold he might bef but was fright-ened at its violence, which forced the (hips to run to any port left worfe might befal them.
The earl of Arundel, with twenty-feven other veffels, made for the harbour of la Palice, two leagues diftant from la Rochelle, where he an-chored : indeed, he was forGed fo to do, for the wind was contrary and he could not leave it When news was brought of this to la Rochelle the townfinen were much alarmed, thinking the Englifh intended attacking the place : they VOL.
