It was then the cuftom, I believe, to lace on the helmets with a flight thong, that they might not make too great refiftance to the blow of the lance. At the fifth courfe, John des Barres ftruck his opponent fo violent a blow on the fhield, that he knocked him over the crupper of his horfe to the ground. Sir Thomas was ftupified by the fall, and it was with much difficulty he could be raifed : however, he recovered well enough to perform his other courfes with the different arms, to the fatisfaction of the king and his lords.
