1388, it was deterirçined in the cou$cil of thg * king of Ei\gland» by the dukes of York a$d Glo-cefter, that Richard earl of Arundel fhould be appointed commander ift chief of a naval expe-dition. He was to have under him one* thou-fand men at arms and three thoufand archers, who were to affemble at Southampton the 15th of May, when the fleet would be ready prepared . to receive them, and it was fixed that thofe who were to accompany him were immediately to begin their parch to Southampton.
The king of England kept a grand feaft on St. ^ George's day, this year, at Wjndfor, which was attended by a number qf the lords, who were to accompany the earl of Arundel, and who there took leave of the king, the queen, his uncles and ladies. The whole of this armament were at Southampton, or in thofe parts, on the up-pointed day, and embarked on board the fleet " the 20th day of May, when the weather was fine and clear. tVith the earl of Arundel were, the earM of Nottingham and Devonfhire, the lord Thomas Percy, the lord Clifford, fir John de Warwick, fir William Shellie, the lord Ca-mois, fir Stephen de Liberie, fir William Elm-ham, fir Thomas Moreaux, fir John d'Ambre-ticourt, fir Robert Sere, fir Peter de Montberry, • fjr Lewis Clanbow? fir Thomas Coojc, fir Wil-liam Paulet, and feveral more : in %e whole, there were one thoufand good men at arms and ^bout three thoufand archers. They embarked no hQrfes with them; for they hoped, if fuccefs-ful, to find horfes in plenty in Brittany. \T\}e
