- Sir Richard Burley, fir Thomas Percy, the lord Fitzwalter, fir Maubrun de Linieres, fir John d'Ambreticourt, Thierry and William de ^Sou-main, with two hundred lancés of fuch as were defirous to feek renown, mounted the beft horfes in. the ..army with the intent to furprife the French garrifon in Vilalpando. They had heard that fir Oliver du Guefclin, conftable of Caftille, had with him there, in garrifon, fome of the ableft knights of France. . They left the army one morning, after drinking a cup, equipped like foçagers, and came to a fmali brook that runs below Vilalpando, which they croffed by fpurrinjg their horfes over it. The alarm was foon fpread through the town, that the Englifh were at the barriers. You would have feen, had you been there when this was known, knights arftung themfelves haftily, and advancing to-wards the lodgings of the conftable, fervants Saddling horfes and hurrying with them to their mailers.
Sir Oliver du Guefclin would have reftrained his companions from fallying forth to meet the Englifh, had he been able; but their courage was too impetuous, fo out they failed, gallantly mounted on horfes that had been- inactive and well fed. Among the firft were, fir John de* Barres, the vifcount de Beftiere, fir Robert and fir John de Braquemont, fir Peter de Vilaines, fir Triftan de la Jaille..
