king John of France and king Charles his fon: I was, in confequence, enabled to hear much during thofe times ; and, for certain, the greateft pleafure I have ever had, was to make every poffible inquiry, in regard to what was paffing in the world, and then to write down all that I had karat. I will now fay from whence I heard of the arreft of the conftable, and the confequences that followed. I was riding about the time this paffed, or perhaps a year after, from Angers to Tours, and had iept at Beaufort-en Vallée*. On the morrow, I over* took a knight from Brittany, called fir William* cPAncenis, who was going to vifit madame de Maille in Touraine, who was his coufin, as (he had lately become a widow. I made acquaintance with the knight* for he was courteous and obliging in fpeech, and inquired the news from him; more particularly about the imprifonment of the conftable, the truth of which I was eager to know. He gave me the information I wanted ; for he faid he had been at the parliament at Vannes, with his coufin the lord d'Ancenis, a powerful baron in Brittany. In the fame mariner as fir Efpaign du Lyon told me all that had paffed in Foix, Beam and Gafcony, and as don Juan Fernando Portelet the eatnts in Caftille and Portugal, did|he gallant knight converfe with me, and would have continued it longer, had I rode farther in his company. * Beaufort en Vallée,—or Beaufort la Ville, a town of Anjou, on the river Authion, fix leagues from Anger*, Jktecn from fours.
