^pHE king of Portugal, on his departure from ' Oporto, left his queen, his fifter-in-law and th^ city under thf guard of the count de Notaire, with qne hundred lances, of Portuguese and Gafcons who had ?ome to ferye him. When the king took the fielcf, he halted the firft day at the diftance of only thjree leagues from Oporto. On the morrow, he diflodged, and marched in three battalions ; but, on account of the infantry, which confifted of twelve thousand men, and the baggage, he could tut advance at a foot's pace.
