THE DEATH OF PETER KING OF ARRAGON, H IS
SUCCESSOR, KINO JOHN, DETAINS PRISONER THE ARCHBISHOP OF BORDEAUX, WHO WAS NEGO-TIATING, FOR THE DUKE OF LANCASTER, THE PAYMENT OF CERTAIN SUMS WHICH HE CLAIMED AS DUE .TO HIM FROM ARRAGON.
j^BOUT Candlemas of this year (138?), king Peter of Arragon lay on his death-bed. When he found there were no hopes of his recovery, he fent for his two fons, John and Martin*, to whom he faid,—1 My fair children, I leave you well eftablifhed, and' the affairs of my kingdom pro-perly arranged. Live peaceably and lovingly, and you will gain honour and renown. With regard to ecclefiaftical matters, for my confcience Ukc and greater fafety, I have always been neuter : do you do the fame, until the knowledge, which pope is the true one, fhall be more apparent.*
