1 By fuch feats of arms, and conquefts, hate the Portuguefe entered tie career of glory, fince the acceffion of don John to the crown of Por-tugal. They fey God is with them, and is their help, in maintaining their rights. Indeed, my lord, they never fail declaring that God is on their fide; for ever fince the death of king Fer-dinand, in all matters of arms they have been concerned in, whether of confequence or not, victory has been for them. The count de Foix, who at this day, is one of the moft potent and wife lords, fays, as we have been told by thofe from his country, that fortune fides with Portu-gal ; and that, if his knights would have iften-ed to him, they would never have left Beam to
fight againft the king of Portugal.
9 My lord, our king is wife and prudent; he fears and loves God, and has an affection for the church, which he exalts as much as in his power. He is frequently on his knees in his oratory and hearing divine fervice, and is very ftrict in never being difturbed whilft at prayer, whatever may be the bufinefk He is a learn-ed man, and underftands fome little of aftrono-my; hut, above all, he will have juftice admi-nistered impartially in his dominions, and the poor maintained in their rights. I have now, my lord, told you every thing, according to your requeft, relative to our king and Country, as I was charged to do when I left it ; and you will give me fuch anfwers as may be agreeable to you/
