'* King John of Caftille aflembled his forces as fpeedily as he could, and marched with a great power before Lifbon, prior to the coronation, of the king, in, order to alarm the inhabitants and make good his claim to the kingdom. He advanced to Santaren, wbich is on the borders, and halted there two days. The garrifon and townfmen, alarmed at his numbers, opened their gates; and furrendered themfelves to him. When f he had _ taken poffeffion and re-garrifoned t\\e place, he marched to Leyria*, which is a very ftrong town, and furroundedit. Leyria was at-tached to the Spanifh intereft, for the town formed part of * queen Leonora's dower ; and, at the firft attack of the king of Caftile, it in-ftantly furrendered. • Having left there a ftrong body of men at arms, he advanced to Valeria d*Alcantara, and laid fiege to it.
