duchies and countries -adjoining, and with their companions in war, • from whom I have never failed afking many questions for my informa-tion; and I have never willingly neglected, after having heard any fact, making every poffible inquiry to know the truth of it.
During the time I " refided with the gallant count Gallon de Foix at Bèarn, I heard many of the tranfactions which had happened in Portu-gal ; but on my return home to Valenciennes in Hainanlt, having refted myfelf a while, my paf-fion for the history I had begun was renewed, and I bethought myfelf that I could not impar-tially continue it, having only heard that fide of the queftion which related to the King of Caftille. It was proper therefore, if 1 wiftied to avoid par-tiality, to hear what the Portuguefe bad to fay, as I had liftened to the Gafcons and Spa-niards in the caftle of Foix, and upon the road in going thither and in returning. Indifferent as to bodily fatigue, I fet out for Bruges expecting to meet fome Portuguefe and Lifboners, as many of that nation are generally there, I was moft fortunate in my journey, for it was told me, and I fince found it true, that if I had confidered for feven years, I could not have come more oppor-tunely to Bruges than at that moment. Ihad only to go to Middleburgh in Zealand, where I fhould find a valiant knight of Portugal, and of the king's council, called don Juan Ferrando de Portelet, who would give me a true account of se events that had paffed in Portugal, having
