CHAP. XLVII. DURING THESE WARS OF THE TURKS, DISSEN-TIONS CONTINUE BETWEEN THE TWO POPES, URBAN VI. . AND CLEMENT VIL—FRIAR JOHN DE LA ROCHE-TAILLARD DELIVERS A GOOD APOLOGUE, RESPECTING THE PAPACY, TO THE . CARDINAL. ABOUT this period, Otho of Branfwick came to pope Clement pt Avignon,,to re-ceive his pay for the war he had carried on for the pope and church againil the Romans and Bartholemew Prignano, who ftiled himfelf pope Urban VI. as you have before feen in this hif-tory. He remonftrated with the pope and car-dinals on various topics, to which they atten-tively liftened : but, as for his pay, he could not obtain one penny, the treafury being fo empty that the cardinals were unable to get what was their due. Sir Otho, therefore, left them much difcontented; but, before he fet out from Avignon, they gave him one thoufand francs, which he held cheap, and the war of the pope was greatly weakened, for fir Otho would not henceforward concern himfelf about it. Befides, Margaret de Duras, duchefs of Anjou, who re-fided at Gaietta, fent for his afliftance againft the Neapolitans. Sir Otho balanced for a time, not knowing which fide to take ; fome of his council advifing him to aid Margaret in the de-fence 349
