c The ambaffadors, on receiving this anfwer, were quite penfive. They took leave of the count, and travelled by fliort days journeys, until they came to where Amurat and his army lay. They related to him all that the count de Lazaran had* done and faid, and that he feertted to hold his menaces very cheap. Amurat was very wroth on hearing this anfwer, and fwore that things fliould not remain as they were; but that he would: enter the territories pf the count whether he would or not, and lay wafte all his lands, in revenge for his infolent anfwer.
c I will now tell you what the count de Laza-ran did, fince war had been denounced againft him, which he knew would be fpeedily followed otherwife than by words. He inûantly made preparations of ftores and provifion, and fent ex-preffes to inform his knights and fquires, and all thofe capable of bearing arms, that Amurat was about to invade Hungary, and to order them to guard valiantly all the paffes into the country^ and join him as fpeedily as may be, for there was 00 time for delay.
