He received the ambaffadors from Amurat kindly, and hand-fomely entertained them, but was much fur-prifed when he faw the mule enter his court laden with he knew not what. He at fir ft ima-gined it might be gold or precious ftones, which Amurat had fent to feduce him to his party, and to bribe him to allow a paffage for his army through his country; but he had refolved, that he would never ftibmit to be corrupted by any prefents whatever., € When the ambalfadors had their audience, they fpoke as follows:—* Lord de Lazaran, we are fent hither by that high and mighty prince, our redoubted fovereign, Amurat, lord of Tur-key and of all its/lependancies ; and we tell you from him, that he orders you to place yourfelf under his obedience in the fame form and man-ner as you know the lords de Satalia, de la Palice and de • Haute-loge have done, and that you delay not coming to perform your homage to him, in like manner as your neighbours have ' done. You will open your country to his army if you wifh to have peace, and by fo doing you will greatly enjoy his good favour; but, fhould you refufe and prove rebellious, we are com-manded to lay, that our fovereign lord, Amurat, will pour more heads into your country, to de» ftjroy it, than there grains of millet in this 341
