were on bad terms with the Lifboners, becaufe they had crowned a baftard for king, and abufed ' them much behind their backs. The king of Caftille and his council, knowing of this diffe-rence of opinion in Portugal, had thus advanced, with the intent of conquering it ; for they faid it would be the affair of only one battle, when, if the Lifboners were conquered, the reft of the country would be rejoiced, and the grand mat-ter of Avis Would be overpowered and flain, fo that the kingdom would fall to Spain, for the queen was the right heirefs to it.
King John of Caftille, however, would will-ingly have avoided this war; but his fubjects would not permit it, as they faid he had jufl caufe for it, and thus emboldened him.
When the king of Portugal found his fum-mons was fo little attended to, and difobeyed by thofe on whofe fervices he had counted, he was very penfive. He aflembled the principal per-fons of Lifbon, and the knights of his houfe-hold who had been moft active in crowning him, and who had ferved under king Ferdinand ; fuch as fir John Radighos, fir John Tefta d'Qro, the lord de la Figuire, fir Gomme de Tarbefton, Ambrofe Condrich, Peter Condrich his brother, fir Monges de Navaret, a knight of Caftille whom, having been banifhed from thence by the king, the king of Portugal had made cap-tain of his knights.
