• that kingdom to march againft him, as has been before related. I do not wifh, therefore, to men-tion it twice, but return to the fiege of Lifbon and the king of Spain, that I may narrate all ' 1 have heard. While the king of Spain was before Lifbon, news was brought him, by fome Spanifh merchants returned from Flanders and Bruges, of the large armament the duke of Lancafter, was collecting to raife the fiege of Lifbon. This intelligence was belieted ; for the Spaniards well knew how anxious the duke was to renew the war with Caftille, as he claimed a (hare of it.
Notwithftanding this information, the king continued the fiege, and fent letters and meflen-gers to France for afiiftance ; he had in particu-lar, written to Beam ; fo that from the territo-ries of Foix and Béarn, there came to him, in lefs than four days, upwards of three hundred lances, the flower of the chivalry of that coun-try. Sir. John du Ru, a Burgundian, and fir Geoffry Ricon, a Breton, with fir Geoffry _ de Partenay, had already pafled through Orthès from France, in their way to Caftille, to ferve the king; each of whom had his own company.
I will name the principal knights of Béarn who prepared for this expedition : firft a great Baron, companion to the count de Foix, the lord de Lingnach, fir Peter Lier, fir John de Lèpres, the lord des Bordes, fir Bertrand de Barege, the lord de Marciage, fir Raymond d'Auflae, fir John de Sallegre, fir Mouvant de Sarmen, fir Peter de la Bobiere, fir Stephen de Valentin, fir Raymond de R 2 .
