YOU may remember, that I have before re-• Iated, how don John of Caftille had be-fieged the matter of Avis, whom the principal towns had crowned king for his valour, though in truth he was a baftard, in the city of Lisbon, You have alfo heard how this king had fent fpecial ambaifadors to the duke of Lancafter and earl of Cambridge for succour, as they had married his confins. Thefè àmbaffadors were two knights, fir John Radinghos and fir John Tefta-d'oro, with a profeflbr of law, who was alfo archdea-con of Lisbon : they continued their voyage, with a favourable wind, and arrived at South-ampton, where they difembarked, and ftaid a day to recover themfelves : they then hired horfes, for they had not brought any with them, and took the great road to London. It was in the month of Auguft, when the king was in Wales hunting and taking his pleafure. The duke of Lancafter and the earls of Cambridge and Buckingham were alfo at their seats in the country.
