We had pof-feffion of Ance, St. Clement,1 la Barrelle, la Terrare, Brignais, le Pont St; Denis, l'Hôpital d'Ortifart, and upwards of fixty caftles in the Maçonnais, Forêts ; Velay and in • lower Bur-gundy on the Loire. We ranfomed the whole country, and they could only be freed from us by well paying. We took, by a night*attack, la Charité, which we held for a year and a half Every thing was ours from la Charité to Puy in Auvergne, (for fir Sequin de Batefol had left Ance, and refided at Brioude in Auvergne, where he made great profit, and gained there and in the adjacent country upwards of one hundred thoufand francs) and below Loire as far as Orleans, with the command of the whole river Allier. The archpiieft, who was then a good Frenchman, and governor of Nevers, could not remedy this ; but, being our old acquaintance, we fometimes complied with his entreaties to fpare the country. The archprieft did great good to the Nivernois, by fortifying the city of Nevers, which otherwise would have beep ruined feveral times $ for we had in the environs upwards of twçnty-fix ftrong places, as wei towns as cailles, and no knight, fquire, nor rich man dared to quit his home unlefs he had compounded with us ; and this war wé carried on under the name and pretext of the king of Navarre.
