time I am fpeaking of in Languedoc, but at-tending the king in the wars in Flanders. . c The citizens of Touloufe, who are a powerful body, perceiving how young the king was and how much occupied with the affairs of his unelç the duke of Burgundy in Flanders, and that they were perpetually plundered by Bretons and other pillagers, fo that they knew not how to prevent it, fent to the count de Foix offers of paying him a certain fum monthly, if he would undertake the government and defence of their city and the other neighbouring towns. They entreated him very earneftly to comply with their requeft, be-caufe they knew him to be an upright man, a great lover of juftice, fortunate in his affairs, and much feared by his enemies. The inhabitants of Touloufe have always borne him great affec-tion, for he has been ever a good neighbour to them. c He undertook the charge of their government, and fwore to hold and defend the country in* its right againft all who were ill inclined, with the reservation of the rights of the king of France.
