It was concluded, that if his lady would furrender, the governor fhould be given up to her, with permiffion to march un-molefted away with every thing that belonged to them. The lady, who found herfelf in fuch a critical fituation, through love to him who could not now defend her, in order to recover her huf-band and to avoid greater dangers, furrendered the caftle, when the governor, his wife and chil-dren fet out with all that belonged to them, and went to Pamiers.* By this means, Peter d'An-chin captured the town and caftle of Ortingas ; and, when they entered the place, he and his companions gained thirty thoufand francs, as well in merchandife which they found there as in good French prifoners. All thofe who were from the county of Foix or Beam received their liberty, with their goods untouched. • Peter d'Anchin held Ortingas for full five years ; and he and his garrifon made frequent ex-curfions as far as the gates of Carcaffone, which is fixteen long leagues diftant, greatly ruining the country, as well by the i^nfoms of towns which compounded, as by the pillage they made. « During the time Peter d'Anchin garrifoned Ortingas, fome of his companions made a lally, being defirous of gain, and came to a caftle a good league off, called le Paillier, of which Ray-mond du Paillier, a French knight, was the lord. They this time accomplifhed their enterprife, having before attempted it in vain ; and, by means of 156
