True it is, that the queen-mother of Hungary-took great delight in the idea of Lewis of France being king of Hungary, and confidered • her daughter as married to hirrf. She wiflied not for any other but him for her son-in-law ; and with this intent (he had fent the bifhop of Vaffereul, with many knights and fquires, to conduct him to his queen.
It happened, that while thefe ambaffadors were on their road to France, the emperor of Germany, who ftiled himfelf king of the Romans, had a brother younger than himfelf, called Henry de Blancquefort. The king of the Romans had been informed of the ftate of Hungary, of the treaties which had been entered into with the count Louis
having gained the confidence of the two princefles, ruled des-potically in their names, infomuch that it excited great mur-'mun among the Hungarian*.. In the year 1785, Charles le Petit, king of Naples, at the folicitations of the difcontented party, arrives at Buda, feizes the government, and caufed himfelf to be crowned king of Hungary in Albe Royale the 31ft of September, in the fame year. On the 5th of Febru-ary following, he is affaflinated in Buda, by order, and in the prefence of Elizabeth./—Od the 1ft of May 1386, John Horwarh, ban of Croatia, furprifes the two queens, at-tended by Nicholas de Gara, while on a journey : he maf-facres the laft before their eyes, drowns Elizabeth the en-fuing night, and carries off Mary prifoner to Croatia. Si-gifmond, marquis of Brandenbourg, flies, on hearing this, to deliver Mary, to whom he was betrothed. He joins her at Albe Royale, whither (he had been fent, marries her at that town,' and is crowned king of Hungary on the 10th of June, Whitfunday, ' being only twenty years old. The ban of Croatia was thi^ fame year arreted by his order, and expiated his crimes by tortures. Mary died at Buda 139% Her body was buried at Pctcr-Waradin.
