CHAP.^IV.
THE TOWN OF ARDEMBOURG* NARROWLY ESCAPES BEING TAKEN BY SURPRISE BY FRANCIS ATRE-MEN AND HIS GHENT MEN. \ - r
AFTER the defeat of the detachment of fir , Raf&art de Flandres, which he had led into the duarte Meftiers, fir Robert de Bethune, vif-count de Meaux, came to Ardembourg, whither he had been fent to garrifon it. He found there. fir John de Jumont and his companions : he had alfo brought with him about forty knights, whcx were eager to meet with adventures. On the vif-^ count's arrival, he began to repair and ftrengthea the fortifications of the town. Francis Atremen and thofe of Ghent were conftantly devifing plans to annoy their enemies, and do them mif-chief. Their attention was particularly directed to places in their neighbourhood, fuch as Oude-narde, Dendremonde, Ardembourg, Damme, JSruges and Sluys. It behoved thofe towns to keep a ftrkt guard and watch well ; for*., in re-gard to ftorming and • fcaling towns, and fuch like fubtleties, thefe ghent men were very flrilfui and alert.
* Ardembourg, ten miles N. E. from Bruges, has been dismantled by the Dutch.
