who was a man of honour and knight of the tody to fir Bernabo, faw them thus approaching his lord, .haymg the.fword of his matter before him, he jnftâritly'drew it out of its fcabbard and placed it in the hands of fir Bernabo (which was feen by thofe who were prefling forward); and then the knight drew his own fword, like a valiant man, and put himfelf on his defence. This, how-ever, did not avail, for he as well as fir Bernabo» were immediately furrounded, and the knight was flain under pretence that at the commence-ment he meant to defend himfelf; for whofe death fir Galeas was afterwards forely vexed. . - . Sir Bernabo was made prifoner without any • defence made by him or his attendants, and v. _ carried to a cattle where his nephew was, who much rejoiced on his arrival. That fame day his wife and children that were marriageable were alfo arretted, and confined by the lord of Milan; who took pofleflion of all the lordfliips, catties.; towns and cities which fir Bernabo held in Lombardy, His uncle died fhortly after ; but I know not by what means, though I believe it was from being bled in the neck, for in Lombar-dy they are accuftomed to make fueh bleedings -when they wifh to haften the death of any one. News of this was foon fpread abroad : forae were pleafed at it, others vexed ; for. fir Bernabo had in his time done fo many acts of cruelty, and without reafon, that few pitied him, faying, he had w^M deferved it. • • This was the end of fir Bernabo * Vifconti, who; fctad reigned mott powerfully in Lombard v.
