THE PILLAGERS OF GHENT, SURNAMED ' POR-KERS, COMMIT MUCH MISCHIEF.—FRANCIS ATREMEN DEFEATS SOME FRENCH TROOPS NEAR ARDEMBOURG.
THE lord Bourchier, who had the govern-ment of Ghent by order of the king of England and the captains of the commonalty, Francis Àtremen, Peter-du Bois and Peter le Nuitre, had made every preparation, knowing the war was to be renewed. They had been * very bufily employed during the truce, in strengthening and victualling the town of Ghent, as well as the castle of Gauvre and all other places under their obedience.
At this period, there were a fet of vagabonds who had taken refuge in the wood of la Ref-paille, and had fortified themfelves in a houfe fo strongly that it could not be taken. They had -been driven out of Alost, Grammont and other towns in Flanders : having wasted their all, and .not knowing how to live otherwife than by plunder, they robbed and pillaged any one who fell in their way.
