their qtiarters in the town below the caftle, not intending more than to dine and continue their journey. When they had difmounted at the inn, Ike travellers who wifhed to repofe themfelvcs, the knights and fquires of the caftle came to vifit them as brothér-foldiers, who always fee each pther with pleafure, particularly the French and Englifh.
• Among the French, there was a fquire of great renown in arms, who belonged to John de pour-bon, count de la Marche, the neareft to his perfon of all his fquires, and whom he loved the moft : his name was John BoucmeL He had formerly been in garrifon in Valogne with fir William des Bordes, and in his expedition againft Cherbourg. During that time, he had often had words with an Englifh fquire, called Nicholas Clifford, who was then prefent, refpe&ing a tilting match. In the courfe of the converfation which thefe French knights and fquires held at the inn with the Eng-lifh, John 3oucmel, 'recollefting Clifford, cried out,—* Nicholas Clifford ! Ah ! Nicholas, Nicho-las, we have pftep wifhed and fought to perform a tilting match s but we never could find fit op-portunity or place fbr it. Now, as we are here before my lord conftable and thofe gendettien, let us perform it : I therefore demand from you three courfes with a lance/ c John/ replied Nicholas* f you know that we are here but as travellers on our road, under the paffportof my lord conftable : what you afk from mc cannot now be complied with, for I am not the principal in the paffport,
