TWELVE CITIZENS OF GHENT ARE DEPUTED TO
THE EARL OF FLANDERS. THE WHITE HOODS
PILLAGE AND BURN THE CASTLE OF ANDRE-ÇHIEN*, OF WHICH THE EARL WAS VERY FOND.
/TAHE good people of Ghent, who were rich and induftrious, and had wives, families and for-tunes in the town and neighbourhood, wifhing as they did to live? in an honourable Way, were not well pleafed to fee things in this fituation, and Were very fenfible how ill they had aéted towards their lord : they therefore cqpfulted amortg themfelves how they could beft remedy this ill deed, and throw themfelves on his mercy, for it wis better to do fo foon than late. ' They called a council, in which it was debated what moft profitable meahs' they could tife to fayc their own honours, and to promote the advantage of the town. John Lyon and the other leaders of the white hoods were in-vited to this council ; otherwife they would not have d^red to have holden it.
Many propofals were made, and long debates enfued i but at laft they determined unanimoufly to eleét twelve of the moft refpeftable of the inha-bitants, who fhould folicit mercy and pardon for
