WHICH CAUSES A SCfflSil IN THE CHURCH Of ROME. - Y'OÛ have before heard how pope Grégbry XI* filled the papa* chair at Avignon. When he found there was not any Kkëhhood of his bringing; about a peace between the kings of France and' Englahdy he.was much difpleaféd, for he had la-boured Hard at it, as well as the cardinals by his orders. He relblved, as a matter of devotion, to fevifit Rome and the holy fte, which St. Peter and S.Paul had edified and augmented ; for he had made a vow to God, that if he fliould ever be raifed to fo eminent an honour as tie papacy, he would never hold his feat but where St. Peter had placed it, This pope was of a delicate conftitution and fickly habit, fo that he fuffered more than another; and-during his refidence at AVignon he was much engaged with the affairs of France, and fo much preffed by the king and his brothers, that he had not time to attend to his own concerns : he there-fore faid, he would place himfclf at a diftance, that he might enjoy more repofc.
