Val were fent back to Brittany with flieir forces,
to alii in guarding that country and the neigh-bouring frontiers.
• During the time thefe negotiations were going forward at Bruges, the duke of Brittany, as has been before faid, remained England* where he felt much for the ^diftrefs of his country, the greater part of which had turned againft him : his duchefs alfo was befieged and fhut up in the caftle of Away. The duke, while he refided with the king of England, was very melancholy : upon which the king, who much loved him, faid j « Fair fon, I well know that through your afteÔion so me, you have put into the balance, and rifked, a handfome and noble inheritance : but be allured' that I will recover it for you again, for I will never make peace with the French without your being reinftated/' On hearing thefe fine promifes, the duke boited' refpc&fully to the king and humbly thanked him.

at arms and xhrcc.. thoufand archers, who all re* ceived their pay for half a year in advance, by order's from the king of England*. ~ •
