They faid to the herald ; ' My friend, you cannot yet feC put on your return. When it fhall fuit my lord the prince, he will write back by you, and by no one* life : you will, therefore, tarry with us until you fcave your anfwer, for the prince wifhes it to be fo/ The herald anfwered, 'Pleafe God, it fhalf be as you fay.' He remained, therefore, with them quite* at his eafe.
The evening of the fame day that the herald had* brought this letter, fir William Felton came to the jprince, and aiked him a favor. The prince, who was ignorant what he wanted, demanded whaf favor he had to requeft : c My lord/ replied fir William, € I entreat permiffion to " quit the army, and fnake an excurfion into the enemy's country j for I have many knights and fquires under my command, M good men as myfelf, that are anxious to do fome* thing worthy of notice. I promife you, if you will permit us to ride forward, we will fee what appear* ance the enemy makes, and where their quartan are.* The prince immediately granted his requeft, as he was pleafed with him for having made it.
Sir William Felton left the prince's army, as thé leader of this expedition, accompanied by the fol-lowing knights : fir Thomas Felton his brother, fit-Thomas Hufford, fir Robert Knolles, fir Gaillard Viguier, fir Ralph Haftings, the earl of Angus, and feyeral other knights and fquires.
