Sir John Chandos returned to the earl of Mont* fort, who afked, € How goes on the treaty ? What does our adveriary fay ?' c What does he fay i9 replied Chandos : * why, he fends word by the lord de Beaumanoir, who has this inftant left me, [that he will fight with you at all events, and remain duke of Brittany, or die in the field.' This anfwer was made by fir John, in order to excite the courage of the earl of Montfort ; and he continued; faying, * Now, confider what you will determine to do, whether to engage or not.* * By St. George/ anfwered the earl of Montfort, * engage I wiH, and God aflift the right caufe : order our banners to ad-vance immediately/
With regard to the lord de Beaumanoir, he faid to lord Charles de Blois ; 4 My lord, my lord, by St. Ives, I have heard the proudeft fpeech front John Chandos that my ears have liflened to for a long time: he has juft aflured me, that the earl of Montfort (hall remain duke of Brittany, and will clearly fhew to you that you have not any right to it/ Thefe words brought the colour into lord Charles's cheeks ; when he anfwered, c Let God fettle the right, for he knows to whom it belongs / and thus faid all the barons of Brittany. He then ordered his banners and men at arms to march, in the name of God and St. Ives.
