paid for his affiftance, infomuch that there 1m owiog to him and his men, for their ftibfidy, thirty thoufand livres. He fent therefore certain perfons N to the duke at Paris, who did not give them wry pleafant anfwers, for they returned without having .been able to do any thing.
Upon this* fir Broquart fent a defiance to tUe duke and to all France, and took poflcffion of a handfome town called Bar fur Seine*, where at that time there were nine hundred hotels, and plundered the inhabitants ; but tbe caftie was £» well guarded, he could not gain it. Having packed up his booty, he carried away upwards of five hundred prifoners, and burnt the town fo complete-ly that nothing remained but the walls. His men retreated to Coofians, which they had made their garrifon, and committed afterward more atrocious aéta in Champagne than ever thç Engliih or mon off Navarre had done.
When fir Broquart and his troop had thus over-run and pillaged the country, there was an agree-ment made with them ; and each man was paid eve* more than he demanded ; fo that fir Broquart re-treated into dorraine, whence he had come, carry-, ing with htm all his foldiers : he left peaceably the kingdom of France and country of Champagne, after having done a fuffieiency of evil to each off them*
