HE IS MUCH HONOURED AT AVIGNON. ^BOUT this period, a knight, named fir Arnold de Cervole, but more commonly called the Archprieft, collected a large body~of men at arnjs, who came from all parts, feeingthat their pay would not be continued in France, and thàt^fince the cap-ture of the king, there was not any probability'of their gaining more in that country. They marched fir ft into Provence, - where they took many ftrong towns and cafties, and ruined the country by their robberies as far as Avignon. • Pope Innocent VL, who refided in Avignon, was much alarmed, as not knowing what might be tbt intentions of the arebprieft, the leader of thefe forces ; and, for fear of perfonal infult, he and the cardinals kept their households armed day and night. When the archprieft and his troops had pillaged all the country, the pope and clergy entered into treaty with him.
