I^HUS was this battle won, as you h^ve beard re* lated, in the plains of Maupertuis, two league* from the city of Poitiers, on the 19th day of Sep* tember 1356*, It commenced about nine o'clock, and was ended by noon ; but the Englilh were not all returned from the purfuit, and it was to recai tis people that the prince had placed bis banner upon a high bufh. They did not return till lato ffter vefpers from purfuing the enemy.
It was reported that all the flower of French knighthood were flain ; and that, with the king and his fon the lord Philip, feventeen earls, with-out counting barons, knights or fquires, were piadu prifoners, and from five to fix thoufand of all forts left dead ip the field.
