When the governor of Calais faw the prepara-tions of the king of England, he collected together x all the poor inhabitants, who had not laid in any ftore of provifions, and, one Wednefday morning, fent upwards of feventeen hundred men, women and children, out of the town. As they were palling through the Englilh army, they alked them, why they had left the town ? They replied, Becaufe they had nothing to eat. The kiog, upon this, allowed them to pafs through in fafety, ordered them a hearty dinner, and gave to each two fieri ings, as charity and alms, for which many of them prayed earneftly for the king.
