1 l'oitou became l'.nglish property aa part of the appanage of Klcanor, wife of Henry II., but was taken from John by l'hilip Augustus, whose ton and successor l/uis VIII. left the prutmce to his son Alfonse. Alfonso dying wiihoitt heirs, 1'hilip III. re-united Foitou to the crown. The Counts of Itrienne were a noble family of France. One of them, previous to Molav'a time, was elected King of Jerusalem, and after-wards Kmpcror of Constantinople ; but no Henry of Brienno is recorded amongst the numerous biographies of members of that family. A seneschal is a high official under tho crown, answering to Lord High Marshal.—Trant.
1 Anjou and Maine came to the crown of Kngland through Henry II.'a mother, Matilda, who married Geoffrey of Anjou and Maine; but they were taken from John by l'hilip Augustin. Louis VIII. left them to his son Charles, whose brother I .ou is IX. obtained from Henry 111. of Kngland full renunciation of his claims to them. Charles of Anjou, brother of St Louis, became King of the two Sicilies, and afterwards of Naples only t and Charles of Valois, brother of l'hilip IV. (the Fair), obtained from the King of Naples the cession of these pro-«inres, Anjou and Maine. So that there Is no place in history for Werner's l'hilip, Duko of Anjou, Frince of the Blood, and banished by FhiliplV.—7«a«.
