A.D. Π03.] FIFTKKN- SAI'JIADIN'S SONS. Saphadin, his younger brother, slew nil his nephews except one named Noiiradin ; he. held possession ol'Aleppo, with all the neighbouring cities, castles, towns, ami other fortified places, which were mon- than two bund red in number. Suphadin, who made himself master of his brother's kingdom, and slew his nephews, had fifteen sons, seven of whom he made his heirs in the kingdoms which he had acquired by murder. The first of the sons was named Melealiin, and for his inheritance lie had the government of Alexandria, Babylon, Cairo, Damictta, and Canisia, with tin- whole country of Egypt; his sou Coradin has Damascus, .Jerusalem, and all the country of the Christians, containing above three hundred cities, fortifications, and castles, besides villages. His third son Melehiphais, holds the district called Gemella, with the whole of the province, in which there are more than four hundred cities, fortifications, and castles, besides villages. His fourth sou, Mchcinodain by name, has possession of the kingdom of Asia, which contains more than six hundred cities, fortifications and castles, besides villages. His fifth son Mechisem.-iphat, holds the country of Sarcho, where Abel was killed ; this kingdom contains nine hundred and more places, including cities, fortifications, and castles, besides villages. His sixth son, named Maehinoth, rules the country of Baltlach, where resides the pope of the Saracens, called the caliph, and who is feared and reverenced in their law as the (toman polititi' is amongst ourselves: this priest can only be seen twice a month, when he goes forth with his disciples, whom he keeps like a pope or cardinal, to the mosque, where Mahomet the god of the Agarenes is said to be, and there, after he has bowed his head and made a prayer according to their law, all present before they go forth from the temple, eat and drink, after which he returns to his palace. That Mahomet is visited and worshipped there, as a Christian nation worships Christ crucified; moreover tincity of Baldaeh, where Mahomet and the caliph are. is the capital of the nation of the Agurciles. as Home is of Christian nations. Saphadin's seventh son, named Salaphal, has no country for his inheritance, h t dwells with his brother Melcaliui, and is his standard-bearer; and to the same Meleidilli, each ol' his brothers sends \ early a thousand Saracens, a hundred bezants, and tuo ehaigers well equipped.
