William marches to London for his coronation—He distributes the lands of the English nobles among his principal followers —The English nobles fly to Scotland—Edgar Atheling takes refuge in Hungary—The princess Margaret marries Malcolm—The sons of Sweyn invade England—William becomes tyrannical—The oppression of the English by the Normans—William invades Scotland; receives the homage of Malcolm—Great abuses in the Church—Quarrel between William and his eldest son—An earthquake in England— —Henry, emperor of Germany, is excommunicated—The fa* mily of William—He founds and endows monasteries— Dies, and is succeeded by William Rufus. Coronation of king William the First, the Conqueror. A.D. 1067. 1 William, duke of Normandy, proceeded to the city of London, was received with great exultation by both clergy and people, and was proclaimed king by universal acclamation, It is not clear when our chronicler makes this year begin. For he speaks here of the year 1067 commencing before Christmas Day, 1066. Perhaps he dates the beginning of the year from Advent Sunday. VOL. II., , Β
