'Ought to1e allowed to employ himfelf chiefly in extracting what Tic âwtka feitaWe for his purpofe ; and it is but reafonabie to allow that Slridan, who .at the lime was living im .France with Pitchmen, 'may, without any want of candour.liave attached himfelf principally to thofe faéb which concerned theni. It will not be fo eafy to juftify Belleforêt, who, giving a French abridgment of Froiflart, has contented himfelf with tranflating Skidan literally, without ever mentioning the author whom he" traofkted. The Englifh, whom the reading of Froiflart interefts in fo particular a manner, have in their language a tranflation of the chronicles of Fraiflart» •compofed by fir John BourcMer, lord Berncrs, by order of king Henry V1IL and printed towards the end of his reign. There is alfo one in Flcmiiti» printed by Guerrit Vander Loo, in folio,—without counting that in the fame tongue which Voflius had feen in manufcript* •I fhall not fay any thing of thefe tranflations, not having met with either. ' That of Bourchier is, they fay, more correét than the French editions in regard ,to proper names • : this muft, however, be underftood to mean Englifh names. The Flemifh tranflation muft have the fame advantage with regard to the proper names of perfons and places in Flanders. They may both be of great utility to any future editor who may wifh to give a good edition of •Froiflart. • I am fbuy that I mull contradiâ M. de St Palaye, in his opinion of bid Beraeis'a . Jnnflatkm. Had it been as be imagines» I IhouM not have attempted to offer a new traafhtioii to the public ; but, to far from being correâ in regard to names, he mangles them nearly as much as Froiflart. I cannot Hatter my&lf with having fucceeded to my own fatisfa&on, although I have taken every poffibk paint to make it as complete as the difficulties attending it would admit. • •6*
