*jpHE duke of Normandy, eldeft fon of the king
of France, iffued a fpeçial fummons of his intention to be at St. Quentin about Sailer, in thè year 1340.
, When he came thither, he was attçnded by the duke of Athens, thé earl of Flanders, the earl of Auxerre, the earl Raoul of Eu, cônftable of France, the earl of Sancerre, the earl of Porcien, the earl of Rouffi, the earl of Brelhe, the earl of Grandpré, the lord of Coucy, the lord of Graon, and a multitude of other nobles from Normandy and the Low Countries. On their being all afTembled at St. Quentin arid its environs, the coAftable and the two marfhals of France, fir Robert Bertrand and fir Matthew de Trie, numbered them, and found there were fix thoufand men at arms, and eight thoufand others armed with brigandines, befides followers of the army ; which were fully fufficient, they faid,. to combat the earl of Hainault, or any force he could bring againft them.
They began their njarch, and took the road to Chateau Cambrefis, going near to Bohain; and advanced fo forward, that they paifed Chateau Qmv bréfis, and topk up their quarters at the town of lyiojitày upon the fiver Selle,
