They eafily paffed the river Scheid^ 'nM far from Mount St. Martin, for it is not very wide at that place.
When the earl of Hainault had accompanied the king of England as far as the boundaries of tha Empire, fo that if he paffed the Scheld he wouLcfc be in the kingdom of France, he took his leave, faying he would not advance further with him at this time ; for as he had been fent to, and Ms aid irequefted by king Philip, his uncle, wbofe ill-will he wiihed not to incur, he would go ferve him in France, as he hadfcrved the king of England in die Empire. The king replied, * God affift you.*
The earls of Hainault and Namur then turned back, and went to Quefooy with all their troops ; Ihe earl of Hainault difbanded the greater part of his, but defired of them to hold themfelvea in readinefs, for he ihould fhortly go to the affiftance of the king of France, his uncle.
