and properly prepared, according to their different ranks, to meet him at Newcaille upon Tyne by a day fixed. Each returned to his home to make preparations. The king was not idle ; and fent other amibaffadors to the king of Scotland, his brother-in-law, to give him public notice, and, if he had not altered his mind, to bid him defiance. The day fixed on drew near ; king Edward and all his hoft came to Newcaftle upon Tyne, and waited there three days for the rear and followers of his army. The fourth day he advanced with his whole army towards Scotland, and paffed over the lands of the lords Percy and Neville, who are two great barons in Northumberland, and marched for ward to meet the Scots. Lord Roos, lord Mowbray, and lord \Lifle, did the fame. The king with his army drew towards the town of Berwick ; for the king of Scotland had not fent any other anfwer by the fécond ambaffadors, than he did by thefirft ; therefore he had been publickly fummoned, and defied. The king advanced with his army, and entered Scotland. He was advifed not to flop at Berwick, but to march forward, and burn the country, as his grandfather had done before j he therefore marched anddeftroyed in this excurfion all the plain countiy, and ruined many towns that were enclofed with -dykes and palifades. He took theftrong caille of Edinburgh, and placed his own garrifon therein. He paffed the fécond river in Scotland below ^Dunfermline j and bis people over-ran the whole H 2 country
