PHILIP OF VALOIS CROWNED KING OF
CHARLES, king of France, fon of Philip the
Fair, had been thrice married, and yet died without heirs * male. The firft of his wives, a daughter of the count of Artois, was one of the moft beautiful women in the world ; however ihe kept her marriage vow fo ill, and behavedfo badly, that ihe was long confined in prifon at Chateau Gaillard, before her huiband was king.
When the kingdom of France devolved upon him, he was crowned by the twelve peers of France and all the barons, who were not willing that fuch a kingdomftiould be deprived of male heirs ; they thereforeftrongly recommended his marrying again, with which he complied, and took to wife the daughter of the emperor Henry of Luxemburgh, lifter to the gallant king of Bohemia. His firft marriage with the lady in prifon,* was diffolved by the pope of that day.
By this feeond wife, the lady of Luxemburgh, who was modeft and prudent, the king had a fon, who died very young, and the mother foon afterward, at Iffoudun, in Berry. The caufe of their deaths was much fufpe&ed, and many were inculcated in it, and privily puniihed.
